Galveston Wharves, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings sign long-term agreement

Galveston Wharves and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH) executives have executed a long-term agreement for NCLH ships to sail from the port’s newest cruise terminal when it opens in November 2025.

Participating in the signing were Rodger Rees, Galveston Wharves port director and CEO, and Dan Farkas, NCLH executive vice president, general counsel, chief development officer and assistant secretary. The ceremony was held at the Galveston Economic Development Partnership annual summit on Oct. 16.

During comments to a crowd of more than 300 attendees, Rees said, “They say ‘Build it and they will come.’ We’re honored that this leading global cruise company is expanding its offerings in Texas, sailing from our new cruise terminal.”

Farkas added, “Galveston is a key hub for NCLH. We recognize the strategic importance of this city, not just for its prime location but for the warmth and hospitality of the people here. This long-term partnership is a promise to grow alongside Galveston, to invest in its future, and to bring world-class cruise experiences through our award-winning cruise brands—Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.”

After limited sailings from Galveston the last two years, NCLH will expand its offerings from the nation’s fourth busiest cruise port and only cruise port in Texas. NCLH, the world’s third largest cruise line, has committed to a 10-year contract with renewal options well into the future at the new $156 million cruise terminal complex.

After three years of seasonal sailings, NCLH will homeport at the terminal full time. Starting with Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, the company’s newest state-of-the-art ships, sailings to Western Caribbean itineraries will begin in November 2025.

The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees unanimously approved the contract at a special meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15. This is the second major cruise line to commit to homeport at Cruise Terminal 16.

Galveston cruise growth

The port broke ground in August to convert an existing cargo warehouse into the port’s fourth cruise terminal. The cruise complex at Pier 16 will include a 165,000-square-foot terminal and a $55 million parking garage.

With the opening of the new terminal, Rees added that he expects the port to reach more than 2 million passengers a year beginning in 2026, which would be a new milestone in Galveston’s 24 years as a cruise home port.

Regional economic benefits

The local impact of the port’s cruise activity in 2023 included 4,547 jobs, $732.5 million in local business revenues and $25.3 million in state and local taxes. Each cruise generates about $2.3 million in business revenue in the local economy.

The fourth cruise terminal is forecast to generate an additional 925 jobs and $177 million in local business revenue annually. The city of Galveston will benefit directly with passenger and parking fees, as well as sales tax revenues from cruise parking.

Nicky Guerrero returns as Secretary General of MedCruise

MedCruise, the Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports has announced the return of Nicky Guerrero as Secretary General of the Association. Nicky was Secretary General of the Association from January to November 2023 and after a break, is resuming the role. The decision has been made by the new President of MedCruise, Theodora Riga, in consultation with the Board of Directors, following the elections that took place during the MedCruise General Assembly in Malaga recently.

Theodora Riga said "We are thrilled to be welcoming Nicky back to the Association for another term as Secretary General. On behalf of all the members of the Board, we would like to thank Anja Lohrum, Interim Secretary General for her service to MedCruise.”

Rouen welcomes upscale cruise ships in September

Gasper George appointed new General Manager of Antigua Cruise Port

Mike Maura, Jr., Regional Director of Global Ports Holding (GPH) Americas, recently announced the appointment of Gasper George as General Manager of Antigua Cruise Port. Mr. George, a native of Saint Lucia, also serves as Director of Operations and Product Development for Saint Lucia Cruise Port and GPH Eastern Caribbean. Since his appointment, he has been diligently preparing for the launch of exciting commercial expansion plans at the port, coinciding with the start of the 2024/25 cruise season.

Mr. Maura, Jr. emphasized the strategic significance of George’s appointment at this pivotal time for the growth of Antigua Cruise Port. “Gasper's expertise and commitment to excellence make him the ideal leader for this key position. Since joining GPH in late 2023, he has proven to be an invaluable asset to our team, significantly contributing to the development and launch of the Saint Lucia Cruise Port redevelopment project and other important regional initiatives. His strong background in the maritime and cruise industry, combined with his leadership experience and dedication to community engagement, positions him to drive progress and innovation at Antigua Cruise Port.”

Maura, Jr. added, “I also wish to sincerely thank Cynthia Jacobs-Browne, our Financial Controller, for her assistance and support as interim General Manager prior to Gasper’s appointment. A dynamic and multifaceted professional, George brings a wealth of experience in stakeholder engagement, management, and business development. Prior to joining GPH, he served as Senior Manager of Business Development and Corporate Communications at the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA). His extensive background includes roles in the private and public sectors, as well as service on key local tourism and industry boards. He is the Chairman of the Saint Lucia Community Tourism Agency and is a member of the Saint Lucia Hospitality & Tourism Association. Additionally, he has contributed to the Marketing and Communications Committee for Airport Council International – Latin America and the Caribbean.

Expressing his enthusiasm for his new role, George stated, “I am truly honored to take on the position of General Manager at Antigua Cruise Port. My focus will be on fostering sustainable growth while enhancing the overall visitor experience. Theodora Riga elected as MedCruise President for the term 2024-2027

During the 65th MedCruise General Assembly held in Malaga, Spain, and within the framework of Seatrade Cruise Med 2024, Theodora Riga was elected as the President of MedCruise.

“I firmly believe in the value of collective action, or as we say in Greek "it is in unity, we stand strong" declared Ms. Riga. “With a vision to continue the work we have done so well, we are going to upgrade our activities and achieve even more, together, while ensuring the responsible development of cruising and benefiting all Mediterranean ports and destinations. Through the collective actions of our members and synergies with other associations and institutions (UNTWO, ESPO, AIVP, CLIA, IAPH, etc.) we partner to maximize the economic, environmental and socially sustainable development of ports, destinations and all stakeholders in the Mediterranean and adjacent seas.”

In addition to electing its new President, MedCruise also announced the new Board of Directors (BoD) for the term 2024-2027. The elected members are:

Theodora Riga succeeds Figen Ayan, Chief Officer at Galataport Istanbul, who will continue her involvement with the Association as Honorary President and elected Board of Directors member.

Born in 1973 in the USA, Theodora Riga holds an MBA in Business Administration and has held senior managerial positions in port, shipping and financial services companies over the last 20 years. Ms. Riga is a member of the National Cruise Committee and a Board Member of a shipping company listed on the Athens Stock Exchange, as Commercial Director and as Management Consultant on Strategic Development, Sales, Marketing and Communication in the largest shipping companies in Greece, providing communication support to the Association of Passenger Shipping Companies.

Theodora Riga is also a Member of the Board of Directors of Thessaloniki Tourism Organization and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping Representative on the Hellenic Government's National Cruise Committee.
