NIT signs Global class turn key agreement with MV Werften

NIT, the Finnish interior turn key supplier, said it is expanding its business operations in Germany through an agreement with MV Werften on the first interior turnkey deal for the Global class series.

“NIT will design and install the main passenger staircase areas for two luxury cruise ships, which will be operated by Dream Cruises. The vessels will be designed for the Asian markets and they are scheduled to sail on their maiden voyages from Wismar in 2020 and 2021,” NIT said in a statement.

With a gross tonnage of 204,000, a length of 342 metres and a passenger capacity up to 9,500, the Global class ships will be the biggest cruise ships ever built in Germany. Both vessels have two large passenger staircase areas, the total area of which is almost 12,000 m2.

In addition to the visual interiors, NIT also delivers electrical installations and piping for these areas.

NIT has provided interior areas for more than 50 large vessels, including some of the largest cruise ships in the world. The company specialises in the most challenging parts of a ship’s interior, such as staircases, restaurants, nightclubs and spas. From its home base in Piikkiö, Finland, NIT works with the world’s leading shipbuilders, with a particular focus on the European shipbuilding market.

Cable manufacturer Helkama Bica wins Meyer Turku cooperation partner of the year award

Helkama Bica, the Finnish cable manufacturer, has won the cooperation partner of the year award of Meyer Turku, the Finnish shipbuilder, Helkama Bica said in a statement.

“Helkama has shown to Meyer Turku that it is a flexible and cost-conscious companion, which offers quality products and ‘we can do it’ attitude plus excellent, personalised customer service,” Meyer Turku was cited by Helkama Bica as saying.

“All these qualities are valued highly at the shipyard, particularly in the years to come, when our orderbook wil keep us and our suppliers busy.”

The award is an annual tradition of the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg and the event was held in Warnemunde in Germany, where a large number of suppliers and contracors had gathered for the latest event. Meyer Turku shipyard attended the event for the second year in a row.

Meyer Turku has a supplier and contractor network of almost 2,000 companies and about 800 of them have staff working on newbuildings under construction at the shipyard.

MKN wins North Germany's 'Export Oscar'

MKN has been presented with the Lower Saxony Foreign Trade Award, "North Germany's Export Oscar", for its intensive international activities and outstanding entrepreneurial achievements in foreign trade.

Scanship wins AWP system retrofit contract for Corinthian

Scanship Holding ASA, through its subsidiary Scanship AS, has been awarded a retrofit contract by Grand Circle Corporation to deliver and install a Scanship AWP system on the MV Corinthian.

The cruise ship, originally built and launched in Italy 1990, is operated by Grand Circle Cruise Line.

The Scanship system when installed, will purify all grey and black water according to IMO Marpol MEPC 227(64) including chapter 4.2 for special area where also nitrogen and phosphorus will be removed.

The retrofit will take place at the shipyard Naval Roche in Lisbon during the fall of 2018.

DNV GL and Meyer Turku sign class contract for Royal Caribbean’s two ICON Class vessels

Meyer Turku Shipyard in Finland and the classification society DNV GL have signed a contract for the classification of Royal Caribbean International’s ICON Class vessels. The contract covers two vessels with delivery scheduled for 2022 and 2024.

“It is a proud day for DNV GL to have been entrusted with the classification of the first vessels of the new ICON Class,” says Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime. “These ships are set to push the envelope of what we can expect from a modern cruise vessel in terms of environmental performance, and we are looking forward to supporting Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku to realise a successful delivery.”

The details of the design for the ICON Class vessels demonstrate Royal Caribbean’s commitment to using the most advanced technologies available to reduce the ships’ environmental impact. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is envisioned as the primary fuel for the new vessels, which would dramatically reduce or even eliminate emission of nitrogen oxide (NOX), sulphur oxide (SOX) and particulates, as well as cutting carbon dioxide (CO2). The ICON Class will also introduce fuel cell technology, which in combination with hull air lubrication means that the ships could potentially be some of the most fuel efficient cruise vessels ever constructed.

The final concept for the first vessel is currently being discussed, and the concept design phase is expected to start this spring. The initial building phase of the first ship will begin next year, with keel laying planned for October 2019.
