Trimline brings Australian style to Pacific Explorer

Now back in service, the former Dawn Princess has been transformed into P&O Cruises Australia's newest ship Pacific Explorer following a 12-day drydock in Singapore, where marine interior outfitters Trimline created a ‘modern Australian’ style in many areas of the ship.

The experienced Trimline on-site team overcame many technical challenges to create the new uber-cool Blue Room – one of the ships main focal points.

Other areas Trimline transformed included The Bonded Store with its secret entrance, Shark Shack, Turtle Cove, Future Sales, Photo Gallery, HQ, HQ+, Black Circus venue, The Lawn Bowls, Elemis at Sea, Elevator Lobbies and Stairwells.

The interior designers said “After 18 months of work on the Pacific Explorer, I’m delighted to tell you that we have delivered a product we are extremely proud of. It is exactly what we hoped to achieve, and P&O couldn’t be happier with the result. We want to personally thank you for all the hard work and support you gave us through this process – It wouldn’t have been possible without you!”

Michael Oliver, Trimline’s Co Chairman remarked “The Trimline team did a great job to overcome technical challenges and deliver the project on time, to budget and to the usual high standards for which Trimline is known. We now look forward to bringing the same level of workmanship to Pacific Eden later this month.”

Deltamarin signs contract with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry to support construction of Viking Line newbuild

Deltamarin Ltd has signed contracts with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd (XSI), which is located in southeast China, for engineering and construction support services for the Viking Line LNG-fuelled ro-pax vessel newbuilding. The contracts cover basic and detail design as well as comprehensive project management support and supervision services to the shipyard during vessel construction.

Deltamarin has developed the new vessel concept together with Viking Line, and delivered assistance in the tender and contract phases for the owner. Deltamarin’s sales manager Nina Savijoki comments: “We are very happy about the constructive cooperation with Viking Line. From a naval architectural point of view, they presented us with every concept developer’s dream challenge: to come up with a concept that is even more energy efficient in relation to cargo capacity than their Viking Grace, one of the most energy-efficient and sophisticated ferries on the market.”

“We have received good support from Deltamarin during the concept development and the worldwide yard selection phase, and look forward to continuing the work together with them and Xiamen Shipyard during the vessel construction,” says Kari Granberg, NB manager at Viking Line.

Special focus in the concept development was put on hull form development, weight control, energy efficiency (including waste heat recovery) and improvement of the General Arrangement. Deltamarin succeeded in making the new concept 10% more energy efficient than Viking Grace.

Now that the Viking Line ship contract with XSI has been confirmed, Deltamarin will continue with the basic and detail design of all disciplines for the yard. Deltamarin will also support the yard in project management as well as passenger vessel building process requirements and provide supervision services during the production of the newbuilding project.

The value of Deltamarin’s contracts with XSI in total is over €11 million. The engineering and pre-construction project management support will be carried out mainly at Deltamarin’s offices in Finland over an estimated period of 12 months. The supervision and other construction support services will be carried out until planned delivery of the vessel in 2020.

The new ro-pax vessel for Viking Line will have a passenger capacity of 2,800 people, and the length of its cargo lanes will be 1,500 metres. In addition to running on liquefied natural gas (LNG), the vessel will have two 24 m-high rotor sails installed. She will serve the Finland – Sweden route, connecting Turku, Åland Islands, and Stockholm as part of the European Union’s Motorways of the Seas project.

Deltamarin earlier worked together with XSI in a construction project for the world’s highest capacity Pure Car Truck Carrier series for Höegh Autoliners.

Oliver Design completes Trasmediterranea ferry upgrade in record time

Oliver Design, which specialises in naval design and architecture, recently completed upgrading of the Ciudad de Ibiza in record time for Trasmediterránea. The project involved fitting out more than 1,000 square metres of interior spaces in just 20 days while the ship was en route from the Caribbean to Algeciras, a major logistical challenge in terms of coordinating the different work involved.

In order to minimise downtime at port, operators from Oliver Design spent ten days working on board the vessel during the crossing from Trinidad & Tobago to Spain. In recent years, the ship had been providing a passenger and wheeled cargo service between the capital of the Caribbean state, Port of Spain and the country’s second island. Built in 2003 at the Barreras shipyards in Vigo and initially named the Super-Fast Galicia, the vessel was acquired by Trasmediterránea in 2005. The 160-metre roro ferry with a beam of 24 metres, can carry 219 passengers and 45 automobiles. It has a loading capacity of 1,715 lane metres, and since 19 June has been operating between Valencia and Ibiza.

On completion of the Atlantic voyage, staff from Oliver Design completed the refurbishment in another fifteen days at the Gibdcock Shipyards in Gibraltar. The work affected more than one thousand square metres of interiors, including refitting of the self-service restaurant and an upgrade on the bar, renovation of a lounge on Deck 8 with a capacity for 95 passengers, as well as refitting of the reception area and stairs, 29 interior and exterior cabins and the adjoining corridor, as well as reconditioning of the public toilets and the crew lounge, including installation of a new service lift.

Oliver Design's work included removal of existing elements and installation of new floors, baseboards and bulkheads adapted to the different spaces; repair and conditioning of windows; painting of ceilings and installation of LED lighting; decoration of panels, cladding and upholstery; fitting of new furniture and curtains in the different areas, catering equipment for the bar and self-service restaurant and new TV screens.

In addition to renovation of the Ciudad de Ibiza, Oliver Design recently completed work on four other Trasmediterránea vessels: partial renovation of the Juan J. Sister and comprehensive renovation of two twin super ferries, the Fortuny and the Sorolla, as well as fitting-out of the VIP lounge on the Zurbaran.

The company has now successfully positioned itself as a key player in services to the ferry sector. Other recent contracts included designing and fitting out interiors on the Texelstroom, the innovating vessel built at the La Naval yard for Dutch shipowner TESO; partial renovation and miscellaneous repair work for the Brittany Ferries fleet and design of Balearia's 232-metre ferry to be built at La Naval in Sestao. With 336 cabins and seating for 609, the ship will have capacity for 1,600 passengers and 350 vehicles. As well as undertaking architectural design, the Spanish firm will also design the interiors, and has been awarded a turnkey contract for fitting out all public spaces and exterior passenger areas.

AXIKO selected to supply HVAC systems for Global-class cruise ships at MV Werften

MV Werften, located in Wismar on the coast of the Baltic Sea in the north of Germany has contracted AXIKO to supply HVAC systems for four Global-class cruise ships (including two options) intended for the Chinese market, for the ship owner Star Cruises.

AXIKO, a consortium established by ENGIE/Axima and Koja Oy Marine, received the HVAC Turnkey contract, which will employ more than 300 people in France, Germany and Finland between the start of the design phase in 2017 and the delivery of the second cruise ship in 2022.

Both parties have agreed not to disclose the contract value.

The MV Werften order incorporates two cruise ships and two options with a comparable size to the Harmony of the Seas: 204,000 gross tons and approximately 2,500 cabins, a capacity which enables them to welcome the largest number of passengers in the world.

A unique consortium

ENGIE/Axima and the Finnish HVAC systems supplier Koja Oy Marine have established a unique consortium termed AXIKO. The two partners have already collaborated successfully on similarly sized cruise ships. This consortium combines ENGIE/Axima’s experience on such large turnkey projects and Koja Marine’s advanced HVAC systems resulting in common design and unbeatable technical performance.

“We are bringing our experience to MV Werften, along with our ability to deliver proven and effective turnkey solutions,” says Philippe Le Berre, Marine Oil&Gas Managing Director of ENGIE/Axima. “Our consortium has been a real strength for the preliminary technical discussions.”

Koja Marine’s part includes the HVAC system, equipment and design. ENGIE/Axima is responsible for the HVAC installations, and for the accommodation, machinery room, chillers, and chilled and heated water production. Special attention has been paid to the environmental dimension of the project through some very challenging performance commitments and the selection of highly energy efficient equipment.

“This new implementation in Northern Europe confirms the international development of the Marine department already present in India, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, and Brazil. It also confirms our expertise on very large cruise ships,” states Le Berre.
The design, installation and commissioning will be realized by the two partners. AXIKO will be responsible for the assembly and the pre-commissioning of the equipment, as well as the overall project management.

The design and engineering has already started and the installation work is expected to take off at the beginning of 2018 for the delivery of the first cruise ship in 2021 and the second in 2022.
