Wärtsilä and Carnival group in 12 year performance based agreement

Wärtsilä, the Finnish engineering group, and Carnival Corporation & plc, the world's largest cruise company, say they have signed a comprehensive, 12-year agreement that strengthens their existing partnership and joint continuous improvement efforts to maintain the highest possible levels for cruise ship safety and reliability.

“The performance-based agreement provides for shared financial incentives and exposure based on outcomes for both companies,” the companes said in a statement.

The value of the long-term agreement is approximately €900 million. The expected revenues for 24 months, approximately €150 million, will be included in Wärtsilä's order book for the first quarter of 2017. As the contract becomes effective as of April 1, the expected revenues for 2017 are €56 million.

According to the agreement, all engine maintenance and monitoring work for 79 of Carnival Corporation's vessels will be handled by Wärtsilä, and ongoing planning will be a collaboration between both companies.

The agreement includes Wärtsilä's Dynamic Maintenance Planning (DMP) and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). These services are based on capturing digitalised data streams from every engine, after which this data is analysed by specialists.

This allows real-time optimisation of the equipment whilst predicting operational and maintenance demands. With the DMP and CBM in place, vessel and fleet operations are optimized and engine overhaul intervals potentially extended. With approximately 400 Wärtsilä engines covered under the agreement, even the smallest improvements in vessel fuel consumption add up to significant annual savings in fleet operational costs.

Helkama Bica and Meyer signed a contract for cable deliveries

Helkama Bica Oy in Finland and Meyer Neptun GmbH have signed a contract for cable deliveries to the cruise vessels to be built on Meyer Turku yard during the years 2017 – 2021. The total value of the contract is about €20 million.

Helkama Bica is specialised in marine cable development and manufacturing. The production facilities are located in Kaarina and Hanko and the company has 135 employees.

Helkama also has a subsidiary company in Shanghai, where marine cables for the Asian market are produced. The daughter company has 65 employees.Helkama Bica is a Finnish family-owned company and a member of the Helkama Emotor group. Another line of business of the group is manufacturing, import and trade of bicycles.

Balearia commissions Oliver Design to develop architectural design of ferry newbuilding

Oliver Design, the Spanish company which specialises in naval design and architecture, recently signed a major contract in the passenger ship sector. “Under the agreement, the firm will develop the architectural design for a large LNG-powered ferry to be built for Balearia at the La Naval shipyard,” the company said in a statement.

The order culminates an outstanding year for the Spanish firm, during which it has completed eight designs on ships of various uses and tonnages, with another 12 designs currently underway and excellent prospects for 2017.

The new 232-metre ferry of Balearia will be able to carry 1,600 passengers and will be one of the largest in its class in the world. It will also be one of the first to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). As well as working on the architectural design, the Spanish firm will design the interiors, and has been awarded a turnkey contract for fitting out all public spaces and external passenger areas.

The as-yet unnamed 8,400 dwt ferry will have 336 cabins, 609 seats and capacity for 350 vehicles. There will also be a children's play area, two theatres, swimming pools, hot tubs, a gym, a cinema and a shopping area. The ship will cost around €175 million, with an option on construction of a twin vessel at the same yard.

Over the last year, Oliver Design also completed partial renovation and a variety of repair works for the French company Brittany Ferries. The work was carried out at the Astander shipyard in Cantabria between October 2015 and May 2016.

Earlier in the year, Oliver Design completed fitting-out and interior design for the innovating Texelstroom ferry, built at La Naval for Dutch shipowner TESO. With this new project, it has consolidated its position as a key provider for the ferry sector.

Scanship to supply total clean ship systems on luxury polar expedition cruise vessels

Scanship, the Norwegian equip,net supplier, has entered into a contract with a Norwegian shipyard to supply Scanship's Total Clean Ship Systems including advanced wastewater purification, food waste processing and garbage handling. These systems will be installed aboard two luxury polar expedition cruise vessels under construction for a European shipowner. Scanship did not disclose further details.

CSSC - Wärtsilä medium speed engine venture opens

CSSC Wärtsilä Engine Co Ltd (CWEC), the joint venture company formed between Wärtsilä and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has formally opened its new production facilities located at Lingang, Shanghai. The opening ceremony took place on 9 January, and was attended by top executives from both Wärtsilä and CSSC.

The new 20,000 m2 production plant is the first in China capable of locally producing large-bore, medium speed diesel and dual-fuel (DF) engines. The plant will also manufacture medium-bore, medium speed diesel and DF engines. Wärtsilä 26, Wärtsilä 32, Wärtsilä 34DF, Wärtsilä 46F and Wärtsilä 46DF engines will be produced at the factory, which has a planned production capacity of 180 engines per year.

CWEC has already booked orders for more than 70 engines and is focused on the cruise, ferry, LNG carrier, offshore, special vessel, and large container ship markets, all of which are strategic growth markets for the Chinese shipbuilding sector.
