Trimline completes refurbishments for Star Breeze and Star Legend

Southampton-based marine refurbishment specialists Trimline have completed comprehensive refitting of Windstar Cruises’ Star Breeze and Star Legend at San Giorgio del Porto, Genova.
These refurbishments mean that Trimline have now transformed all six of Windstar’s ships. Star Breeze and Star Legend now feature striking new AmphorA restaurants, setting the highest standards in dining with new furniture, décor, curtains and lights. Meanwhile, passengers who prefer to dine al fresco can enjoy the Veranda at the stern, which becomes Candles Restaurant by night, complete with a protected outdoor seating area in place of the old swimming pool. This welcome new feature has an impressive seven metre wide archway encompassing an artificial living wall, as well as new seating.
Similarly, the Compass Rose lounges and bars have been completely revitalised, with new Amtico flooring and elegant contemporary decoration creating the perfect spots to relax and unwind. Alternatively, passengers can enjoy the StarBar, with their new teak decking and reupholstered seating.
Film buffs will be sure to take in the Star Screening Rooms: intimate, comfortable cinemas newly converted from two rooms. Similarly, the new flooring, decoration and plantation shutters make the Gyms ideal places to work out, whilst the upgraded Star Signature Shops are the venue for a little retail therapy.

DNV GL appoints Tor Svensen as Group EVP and Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen as Maritime CEO

DNV GL Group has appointed Tor Svensen as Group Executive Vice President. Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen will succeed Tor Svensen as Chief Executive Officer of its Maritime business area. Both will report to the incoming Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen, starting 1 August 2015.
Ørbeck-Nilssen has since 2013 served as COO and Senior Vice President of DNV GL’s Maritime business area. He will now take on the new role as CEO and continue to operate out of the maritime headquarter in Hamburg, Germany.
“As a result of the merger between DNV and GL, we are now positioned to provide an enhanced set of benefits for our maritime customers. I look forward to lead our Maritime business and to ensure we remain the world’s leading classification society. I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to Tor E. Svensen for his excellent contribution. Also, I look forward to his continued support and engagement with maritime customers,” says Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen.
Tor E. Svensen has been the CEO and President of DNV GL - Maritime since 2003. In his new role as Group EVP he will support the Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen with particular focus on developing customer relationships and strategic projects for the DNV GL Group.
“Having worked closely with Knut the past two years in leading our Maritime business area, I am confident that he has the technical insight, management skills and not least the support from his colleagues necessary to lead the Maritime organization. I look forward to continue supporting him and our key customers in my new role,” says Tor E. Svensen.

TTS begins installation of Stockholm's new passenger gangways

In a huge urban development program the Ports of Stockholm organization is extending its Port of Värtan through reclaimed land, making room for a new terminal.
This is now taking shape with the first sections of a new passenger gangway having been fixed in place on supporting columns. Designed and installed by TTS Marine AB, the new gangways are of trussed steel construction with glass walls giving them a light and airy feel in harmony with the new terminal building. The glassed area will be complemented in part by insulated walls.
In all, TTS has the contract to design, construct and install 600 meters of fixed gangway as well as six movable gangways to connect the new terminal building to the vessels. In order to provide relief to Stockholm's road system the gangways have been shipped by sea.
The movable gangways will serve three of the five berths. With two movable gangways per berth, the capacity for foot passenger traffic will therefore be high, enabling short vessel turnaround times. Passengers using quays 2 and 3 will be introduced to the new facilities in October.
DNV GL and Jotun cooperate on hull performance

DNV GL and the Norwegian paint manufacturer Jotun have signed a cooperation agreement to work on improving hull performance. The project will bring together two performance management services, Jotun’s Hull Performance Solution and DNV GL’s ECO Insight solution, to collect and analyse data on hull degradation. This will enable customers to cut their fuel bills and reduce emissions.
Experts suggest that hull and propeller degradation accounts for up to 17 per cent of the world fleet’s fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Advanced hull coatings solutions or more regular hull and propeller cleaning are already widely accepted as effective preventive measures. However, there is no conclusive evidence showing which coating solution is the most effective or when and how often propellers need to be cleaned.
“Our Hull Performance Solution (HPS) combines state-of-the-art hull coatings and application technologies with ISO-CD-19030-2 compliant performance measurements and high performance guarantees – helping customers reduce fuel costs and emissions by up to 16 per cent,” says Stein Kjølberg, Global Sales Director, Hull Performance Solutions at Jotun.
DNV GL will provide Jotun with hull and propeller performance computations based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models that include the complete operational range of the vessel. “This approach generates a much greater amount of baseline data than a conventional model tank test could deliver and provides customers with the information they need to prove that they reduced both fuel consumption and emissions to charterers for example,” explains Dr. Torsten Büssow, DNV GL’s Head of Fleet Performance Management.
ECO Insight computations also show how much resistance is added over time due to hull fouling. The portal further provides customers with the opportunity to benchmark measured hull and propeller degradation with other ships in their fleet as well as relevant peer group averages.
New on-board scrub water treatment solves urgent problem

The more common use of scrubber technologies on-board larger vessels opened a new problem, on how to dispose the highly toxic scrub water in a sustainable way. A new on-board system to handle the hazardous waste is now introduced. The Luxemburg clean-tech expert APATEQ complements its existing scrub water treatment system MarinePaq for use in ports with a very compact version for operation on board.
APATEQ of Luxembourg is now introducing a new, very compact version of its scrub water treatment system for use on-board larger vessels. The effluent of excess water produced in a closed loop scrubber is treated in order to comply with IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations for direct discharge to the sea.
“The MarinePaq on-board system is developed on direct demand from ship owners in order to handle hazardous scrubber wastewater,” said Rolf Hollmén, CEO of Björneman Water, the consultant bureau that handles implementation and sales of APATEQ systems in Northern Europe. “The most efficient solution for a ship owner sailing in SECA waters is a retrofit with a scrubber to continue the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) as alternative fuels are so far still on the margin. For a sustainable process, a scrub water treatment unit must be implemented to follow the scrubber. A year ago we introduced our larger systems for ports and now follows our ultra compact on board equipment. Scrub water is so hazardous, contaminated with heavy metals and highly corrosive so a very special process technique is needed.”
In full compliance with IMO regulations and better
Dirk Martin, Chief Sales Officer at APATEQ points out the advantage of APATEQ’s proprietary process technologies for high-efficiency primary treatment and ultrafiltration by using non-clogging membranes with a long lifetime. “Our well-proven equipment removes up to 99% of suspended solids and brings the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) below 40 parts per billion, thus exceeding strictest regulations for direct discharge into the sea, such as from the IMO,” he said. “Transportation of the wastewater to a harbor as well as on-shore disposal costs are avoided. My guess is also that with the tight schedules, many ships will not have enough of a turnaround time to empty the tanks at a disposal unit.”
Dirk Martin finally concludes the major features of the MarinePaq systems: “Regardless if the treatment unit is for on-board use or a larger plant in a port, they are constructed for a long life span and continuous operation by meeting the most stringent standards in a highly corrosive environment. To increase reliability, all vital functions can be built redundantly. As all of the APATEQ‘s water and wastewater treatment systems, MarinePaq is fully automated and can be monitored and controlled remotely, thus reducing the operational costs as no permanent supervision on-site is required.”
