Deltamarin designs world's largest civilian hospital ship

Deltamarin has been awarded design contract by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) for the new 37,000 GRT (Gross Register Tonnage) hospital ship to be built for Mercy Ships at Tianjin Xingang Shipyard.

Deltamarin’s contract includes approval, procurement and detail design for the vessel, which will be the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, and the first of its kind in Deltamarin’s history. Deltamarin has earlier developed, for yard tendering purposes, the concept design of the vessel together with Stena RoRo, who will manage the actual construction of the hospital ship. The shipbuilding contract was successfully negotiated by shipbrokers Barry Rogliano Salles (BRS). The delivery of the ship is planned for July 2017.

Excited about this unique project, Director of Deltamarin’s Marine business, Mr Jarmo Valtonen, comments: “When developing the new vessel concept together with Stena and Mercy Ships, we have learnt a lot about the goals and visions of Mercy Ships, and it gives us great pleasure to be part of this very special project to help the underprivileged in the developing nations”.

The vessel will be certified as a passenger ship for long international voyages and will be registered under the flag of Malta with Lloyd’s Register classification. The main dimensions are 174 metres in overall length and 28.6 metres in breadth. The design service speed will be 12.0 knots. The vessel will have two hospital decks and can carry 500 persons on board when sailing; when in port, the capacity will be 950 persons. There will be a total of 641 beds in the 277 cabins. The vessel will even house a school for children of the staff.

The total value of this contract awarded to Deltamarin by CSIC is around 4.2 M€, and the work is to be carried out over an estimated period of 15 months.

ABB to supply Shore to Ship Power system to Color Line ro-pax

ABB, a leading global provider of innovative, reliable, safe and environmentally-friendly power and energy solutions, is to supply a complete S2S system to Color Line’s ro-pax ferry, SuperSpeed1.

The 34,231 tons gross SuperSpeed1, built by Aker Finnyards at Rauma in Finland, has been in service on the Kristiansand – Hitshals route since 2008 and is the third Color Line vessel to be equipped with ABB’s system, after the Color Magic and Color Fantasy.

The contract, due for completion in March, underscores ABB’s Environmental Compliance policy designed to enable shipping companies to operate their fleets in the most efficient and green manner. The installed system will be one of the fastest connection systems available, allowing the vessel’s operation to be switched to shore power in a matter of minutes.

Scope of supply comprises compatibility assessment, installation of the S2S connection switchboard, the onboard transformer, the low voltage receiving switchboard, the extension of the automation system and the shore side high voltage shore connection switchboard in Kristiansand, Norway, where the 11 kV system will supply the existing low voltage 690 V system while the ferry is in port.

Color Line is one of Europe’s largest ferry owners with annual sales in the order of USD 770 million and it deploys six ships on routes linking seven ports in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. The company has again selected ABB’s system as it reduces fuel consumption and costs on the highly competitive routes.

The ABB system complies fully with IEC/ISO/IEEE standards as well as all other relevant rules, and allows operators to reduce fuel consumption as the vessel is powered from the shore while in port, reducing power costs substantially. It eliminates CO2, NOx, SOx and PM completely while the vessel is in port, meaning annual reductions of CO2 and NOx emissions are up to 3,000 tons and 50 tons, respectively, and particle and SOx emissions are cut by several tons.

The installation also contribute to society’s broader needs, says Heikki Soljama, Head of business unit Marine and Cranes. “We are providing energy efficient solutions to a ferry line that connects key locations and therefore facilitates the transportation of people and goods between destinations including the Kristiansand – Hitshals route, where transit time on Superspeed 1 is between three and four hours.”
