The Board of Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), the Swedish-Danish port company, has given the go-ahead to build a cruise terminal in Copenhagen. The terminal will be located beyond the current Oceankaj in Ydre Nordhavn and will be able to handle more than 5,000 passengers per call thetas due to open in 2020.
The prospects for the future of the cruise industry are promising, with constantly rising demand. To be able to cope with the increasing interest, CMP has made the assessment that current facilities need to be augmented with another terminal building, Terminal 4.
“A new terminal, designed for more than 5,000 passengers, will enable us to receive more and bigger ships in future. With this development, we are making sure that Copenhagen retains and develops its position as the leading cruise destination in Northern Europe. We look forward to continuing to attract passengers to the attractive city of Copenhagen through close collaboration with various partners and actors in the city,” says Barbara Scheel Agersnap, CEO of Copenhagen Malmö Port.
In 2017, 55 ships, each with more than 4,000 passengers on board, visited CMP in what are known as turnaround calls, when ships change their passengers. The total number of cruise passengers arriving during the season will be around 850,000 people.

Tortola Pier Park in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) through the BVI Ports Authority received the prestigious accolade of “2017 Port of the Year” awarded earlier this month by Seatrade Cruise Global, the port said in a statement.
Since opening, Tortola Pier Park has morphed into a popular multifaceted lifestyle center featuring a unique experience for visitors and residents alike to enjoy the shopping, dining and entertainment offerings. With this great accomplishment the Management of Tortola Pier Park found it fitting to enter the awards programme offered by Seatrade in hopes to achieve the esteemed recognition of Port of the Year. Through this entry Tortola Pier Park made the shortlist along with Port of Akureyri - Iceland and Port of Olden-Nordford - Norway and in turn became the victor, achieving the title of Port of the Year.
“We are honoured to have received this title of Port of the Year as we have worked tireless since opening to constantly provide an exceptional customer experience through our daily interactions, product mix and services. Winning this award comes at a time when the BVI has been affected by a devastating category 5 hurricane. While we are currently working on rebuilding and restoring the island and our award-winning cruise pier, this award serves as a reason for hope and strength and provides added impetus to become a stronger cruise facility and in turn a stronger destination. We will carry this title with pride as we work towards a better tomorrow, with renewed passion," said Dona Regis, CEO of Tortola Pier Park Ltd.
