Stena RoRo places order for two new multi-fuel E-Flexer ropax vessels

Stena RoRo has ordered another two E-Flexer ropax vessels from the Chinese shipyard CMI Jinling (Weihai). The vessels will be delivered in 2027 to the Greek shipping company Attica Group and will operate in the Adriatic Sea. This is Stena RoRo's fourteenth and fifteenth vessel in the E-Flexer series.

The two vessels will be on long-term charter agreements to the Attica Group with an option to purchase and a potential option for two more vessels.

The E-Flexer series is based on a concept with larger vessels than today's standard ropax ferries and is very flexible. Each ship is tailored to the customers' needs, both commercially and technically. Optimized design of the hull, propellers and rudders, together with possibilities to incorporate new environmentally friendly technologies, help to ensure that the E-Flexer vessels are at the forefront when it comes to sustainability, performance and cost effectiveness.

The vessels' engines are of the multi-fuel type and can run on conventional marine fuel (HFO or MGO) or biodiesel. In addition, the engines are methanol ready. The E-Flexer concept has been designed in line with future environmental requirements and, through its technical design, can meet both existing and future international requirements by a wide margin. The vessels will be designed with the classification society notation “Battery power” which means that in the future the vessels will also be able to utilize batteries as a means of propulsion, partly or completely, depending on the battery development.

Panos Dikaios, CEO, Attica Group commented: ”For three decades, the Attica Group has been renewed through the design and construction of new vessels. The Superfast series redefined the Adriatic ferry market in terms of quality and speed, the sister vessels Blue Star Patmos and Blue Star Delos significantly upgraded the travel experience on the Aegean Sea routes and the latest addition, the three state-of-the-art Aero Highspeed, have already contributed substantially to the increase of visitors to the Saronic Islands. Our agreement with Stena RoRo for the charter of two new state-of-the-art vessels, sets new standards for the entire Greek ferry industry. It drastically reduces our environmental footprint, redefines the travel experience and responds dynamically to the challenges of tomorrow.”

Per Westling, VD Stena RoRo stated: ”The E-Flexer vessels to Attica have been jointly designed and ordered as the most bespoke E-Flexers so far. The design is extremely versatile, and the ships will, with their inherent flexibility of different fuels, battery hybrid operation and many other fuel saving features, play an important role in the green transition of the Attica Superfast Adriatic RoPax service.”

Stena RoRo currently has 15 confirmed orders for E-Flexer vessels, as well as two so-called "New Max" roro vessels, at CMI Jinling, Weihai shipyard. Ten ships have been delivered.

Explora Journeys, the luxury lifestyle ocean travel brand of MSC Group, and ship builder Fincantieri have announced a joint decision to set a new date for the delivery of Explora II. After careful and detailed reviews of Explora II, it was decided that more time is needed for the final finishes to the ship to guarantee the highest quality luxury standards and to ensure that the new ship delivers to the fullest on the brand’s promise of an unmatched luxury ocean experience.

Explora II will be delivered on September 12, 2024 and the maiden journey of the new vessel will take place on September 16, 2024 departing from Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy with a 7-night journey to Sorrento, the island of Lipari, Trapani and Siracusa in Sicily, Valletta in Malta and Tarragona, Spain. Fincantieri and Viking sign contracts for two ocean cruise ships

Fincantieri and Viking have announced that they have signed contracts for the construction of two cruise vessels, based on the successful features of the previous ships, which Fincantieri has already built for this shipowner. The vessels will be delivered in 2028 and 2029. The value of this agreement, subject to financing and other terms and conditions, is considered as large1.

The new ships will be built according to the latest environmental rules and navigation regulations and will be equipped with the most modern safety systems.

The vessels will boast all innovations made available by the ongoing cooperation between Fincantieri and Viking for the development of eco-friendly fuels and of sustainable zero- emission power generation systems. The new vessels will be placed in the small cruise ship segment, the gross tonnage is about 54,300 tons and they will accommodate 998 passengers on board in 499 cabins.

This contract confirms the cruise market’s full recovery and its strong momentum, with passenger volumes returned to pre-pandemic level and positive effects on Fincantieri’s solid commercial pipeline, as evidenced by other significant orders signed by the Group earlier this year. It also demonstrates the strong and long-lasting relationship between Fincantieri and Viking - dating back to 2012 - and whose collaboration reaches, as of today, to a total of 20 vessels, including the two purpose-built expedition units of the subsidiary Vard.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, commented: “This order further cements our relationship with Viking and establishes Fincantieri as the partner of choice for ship owners looking to build vessels fit for both current and future energy sources. Together, Fincantieri and Viking are leading the shipping industry in the path to net zero. With this contract, Fincantieri confirms its strong order pipeline and its reputation as a long-term partner of excellence within the cruise sector, as stated in our 2023-27 Industrial Plan”.
