Virgin, Cunard newbuildings close matches in tonnage and capacity

The three newbuildings of Virgin Voyages will be a fairly close match in terms of capacity and gross tonnage with Cunard Line’s recently ordered fourth ship.

The Virgin Voyages’ ships will have “over 1,400 guest cabins that can host more than 2,700 passengers,” according to Fincantieri, the builder of the trio. The gross tonnage of the ships is given as 110,000.

Meanwhile, Cunard Line is due to receive a 113,000 gross ton newbuiding, also from Fincantieri, in 2022. The ship, which will be based on the Koningsdam of sister company Holland America Line’s Pinnacle class, will have accommodation for 3,000 passengers.

Virgin Voyages, which is based in Miami and was set up by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group that is located in London together with US and Gulf investors, will receive the trio at one year intervals, starting in 2020.

Carnival Cruise Line names Richard Pruitt Vice President, Environmental Operations

Richard Pruitt, a highly respected and seasoned cruise industry professional, has been named vice president, environmental operations at Miami-based Carnival Cruise Line effective November 20, 2017. He will report to Mark Jackson, senior vice president, technical operations, for Carnival Cruise Line.

As vice president of environmental operations, Pruitt will be focused on further strengthening and expanding the company’s shipboard and shoreside environmental programs and practices.

“Rich is extremely well respected in the industry and we’re thrilled to gain his exceptional knowledge, expertise and leadership,” said Jackson. “We look forward to tapping into his experience to ensure we maintain the highest level of operational standards.”

Previously Pruitt was at Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. for 13 years, serving in a variety of positions, including associate vice president/vice president, safety and environmental stewardship and as the director and associate vice president of environmental programs. Most recently, Pruitt served as the principal and founder of RMP Sustainability, a company providing consulting services on environmental equipment marketing, compliance and sustainability initiatives to industry associations and companies.

Pruitt began his career in the U.S. Air Force where he spent 10 years as an Airborne Russian Linguist and Mission Supervisor. He then served for 13 years in the U.S Coast Guard in various roles, including program manager, passenger vessel safety and security.

Since 2010 Pruitt has been an active guardian ad litem for the 17th Judicial Circuit in Broward County, Florida, and has served on the board/executive committee of several organizations, including Florida Ocean Alliance, Florida Sea Grant Advisory Council, Florida Oceans and Coastal Council, U.S. N.O.A.A. National Marine Sanctuary Business Advisory Council, International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators and the North American Marine Environment Protection Association. He was chairman of the Cruise Lines International Association’s Maritime Safety and Environmental committees, and founding board member of Voices for Children Broward.

Pruitt holds an Environmental MBA from Florida Atlantic University, a BA degree in Management from National Louis University and an AA degree in Russian Interpreting from the Community College of the Air Force.

Regent names Megan Hernandez to SVP and Chief Marketing Officer

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has appointed of Megan Hernandez as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for the cruise line. Hernandez will lead the brand’s global marketing strategy and drive worldwide preference among both travelers and valued travel agent partners for Regent’s most inclusive luxury experience.

Hernandez was most recently the Vice President of Guest Experience Marketing for Norwegian Cruise Line, where she led loyalty, product, consumer, and travel partner marketing, and market research. Prior to Norwegian Cruise Line, Ms. Hernandez was with Procter & Gamble and AT&T. She holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Southern California – Marshall School of Business, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree from Loyola Marymount University.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ third quarter and nine month profit falls on lower passenger days

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, the UK based destinational operator of four ships, has reported a fall in net profit for the third quarter and the first nine months of the year on a 7% fall in passenger days, parent company Bonheur said in a statement.

Third quarter net profit fell to NOK95 million from NOK127 million in the same period last year, while revenues fell NOK2 million to NOK620 million.

In January-September, the profit narrowed to NOK95 million from NOK190 million year-on, while revenues rose by NOK4 million to NOK1.67 billion.

Cash holdings of the company increased to NOK807 million on 30 September from NOK592 million a year earlier and the company has no debt. Equity increased to NOK1.26 billion from NOK1.16 billion.

The number of passenger days totaled 284,823 for the third quarter compared to 306,961 year on, a decline of 7%. “Net ticket income per diem (GBP) was 14% higher, compared to the corresponding quarter last year,” Bonheur said.

Pursuit allows Azamara to add new destinations

Azamara Club Cruises, the cruise line known for its Destination Immersion programming, has revealed its 2018-19 sailings for the brand’s newest addition, Azamara Pursuit. The Azamara Pursuit, announced in September, joins sister ships Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey in providing guests with one-of-a-kind curated experiences and access to some of the most exotic destinations around the globe.
