Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven prepares for Crystal Symphony refurbishment 

Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven, the German cruise ship refurbishment specialist, is preparing to receive the 1995 built Crystal Symphony its owner, Crystal Cruises in Los Angeles, begins to upgrade its existing deep sea fleet of two ships.

Also planned is a major refurbishment of the Crystal Serenity, which entered service in 2003, although the contract for that work that is due to take place next year has not as yet been awarded.

The contravtr to upgrade Crystal Symphone is the first direct internal contract between Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven and Crystal Cruises, both of which are part of the Hong Kong based Genting Group.

Crystal Symphony, is expected to arrive at the entrance to Lloyd’s giant Kaiserdock II in the early evening of 23 September. The  ship is expected to remain in Bremerhaven for the multi-million euro refurbishment until 16 October.

“The work is actually being shared. The interior refurbishment will be carried out directly by Crystal Cruises or its partner companies while Lloyd Werft will be responsible for the shipbuilding aspects and for all the logistical demands of the contract. As a result, not only a large part of the Lloyd Werft work force but also several hundred crew members and sub-contractors will all be busy on the site,” the shipyard said in a statement.

Along with regular ship maintenance work the vessel, which currently has a capacity of 922 passengers, will get two new restaurants. The technical pre-requisites for the introduction of free on-board WLAN.

In addition, ultra-slim 24 inch screens will be installed in every cabin. In the course of the refurbishment some smaller cabins on Deck 9 will be converted into luxury penthouse suites with butler service. A total of 40 of these new suites, of 34 to 45 square metres in size, will be created, reducing passenger capacity to 848.

 

Meyer Turku to increase planned investment to €185 million from €75 million

Meyer Turku, the Finish cruise ship builder, as decided to increase its investment programme to €185 million from an earlier plan of €75 million, the company said in a statement.

The additional investment includes the purchase and installation of a new sheet metal production line, a corrugated metal fabrication line and certain ancillary equipment plus a hybrid panel fabrication line that uses laser technology.

Mika Heiskanen, Head of Hull Production said that the now decided investment would allow the shipyard to increase its production capacity and turn it into a modern assembly facility that is among the most efficient ones in the world.

P&O Cruises to publish Adonia’s summer 2019 itineraries soon

P&O Cruises, the UK focused contemporary market unit in the Carnival Corporation & plc group, will publish the itineraries of Adonia in the next few weeks.

“The itineraries for Adonia are still being finalised and an update will be provided over the coming weeks,” a spokesperson of the line told Cruise Business Online.

P&O Cruises unveiled the Summer 2019 itineraries of its seven other vessels yesterday, but Adonia was not included. At 30,277 gross tons, it is the smallest ship in the company’s fleet.

Columbia Shipmanagement and Marlow announce regulatory approval for their merger

Columbia Shipmanagement and Marlow Navigation have announced confirmation of regulatory approval allowing their previously reported intended merger to proceed. The merged company will be named Columbia Marlow.

"Columbia Marlow will continue to deliver the high-level quality services that are, and will continue to be, in demand by today’s fast-changing shipping industry. It will focus on its core services of technical and crew management, together with whatever support services are required by its clients," Columbia said in a statement.

"The merger is seen as a perfect fit and brings together two of the shipping industry’s most highly respected privately owned shipmanagement companies," it continued.

Adonia not featured in P&O Cruises’ Summer 2019 programme

Adonia, at 30,277 gross tons the smallest ship in the fleet of P&O Cruises, does not feature in the Summer 2019 programme of the UK focused contemporary market unit of Carnival Corporation & plc.

P&O Cruises published its Summer 2019 programme today. However, it does not feature in the news release the company issued regarding the programme and on the company’s website, the last cruise of the ship is a 21 night voyage from Barbados to Southampton in March 2019.

P&O has a fleet of eight ships in service plus a 180,000 gross ton as yet unnamed newbuilding on order at the Meyer Werft in Germany.
