Silversea Cruises inspires guests with fleetwide premiere of Steve McCurry biopic

Silversea Cruises recently hosted its global fleetwide premiere of McCurry: The Pursuit of Color, an intimate portrayal of the brand’s long-term collaborator, Steve McCurry – one of the world’s most celebrated photographers. The cruise line screened the film to guests sailing aboard its 11 ships throughout June, inspiring travelers to cherish the world’s authentic beauty, and safeguard the planet and its inhabitants. Steve McCurry has travelled to over 35 countries as part of his exclusive collaboration with Silversea Cruises. Many of these journeys feature in the film, including trips to India; Mongolia; Madagascar; Bhutan; the Arctic; the Virunga Mountains, Uganda; and more.

From challenges in childhood to the pinnacle of world photography, McCurry: The Pursuit of Color charts Steve McCurry’s rise to the top of his craft, revealing the untold stories behind his iconography and reflecting on the pivotal moments of his adventurous life. Appealing to Silversea’s curious and well-travelled guests, his body of work spans conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions, and contemporary culture alike—yet always retains the human element that made his celebrated image of the Afghan Girl so powerful. Directed by documentary filmmaker Denis Delestrac, the film explores the fascinating life of one of our generation’s greatest visual storytellers, as he travels across war-torn countries and other challenging environments, including monsoon-season India, to capture authenticity in its rawest form. Viewers see new, previously undocumented facets of Steve McCurry: his childhood, his travels, his life in New York, his family life, and more.

“We are honored to work closely with Steve and to sponsor, co-produce, and screen this insightful film, directed by award-winning Director Denis Delestrac, across our fleet of 11 ultra-luxury ships,” said Barbara Muckermann, President and CEO, Silversea Cruises. “Silversea Cruises facilitates immersive travel as a form of self-enrichment, encouraging a deep respect for the planet and the communities we visit. In this regard, Steve McCurry is the perfect ambassador for our cruise line. The film presents strong messages on diversity, respect, and embracing differences. As one of the most iconic voices in photography for over 50 years, his work inspires viewers and our guests, celebrating the authentic beauty of the world we all share with a distinctive quality.”

"I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Silversea Cruises and Barbara Muckermann, President and CEO, for showcasing the documentary about my work and career on their fleet. I hope that viewers see the world as I have over these past five decades and understand how photography transcends language barriers and cultural divides and beckons us to reflect on the beauty and complexity of our planet."

McCurry: The Pursuit of Color, produced by Intrepido Films and Polar Star Films, is written and directed by Denis Delestrac, a renowned documentary filmmaker and winner of more than 40 international awards. In 2001, after having worked as a writer and photographer in France and the United States, Delestrac switched his career to documentary filmmaking in India, where he met Steve McCurry, with whom he made his first documentary short. Delestrac has previously worked with Silversea and Steve McCurry on various projects.

"Steve is the creator of a lot of iconic images, throughout a lot of modern history, for a lot of people, but he's a very low-key person," says Denis Delestrac. “He prefers to let the images speak for him, but I was interested in going beyond the images to find out what has made his work so strong and relevant over nearly four decades. In the film, we travel back to his childhood and life experiences to understand his unique vision. I will forever be grateful to Steve for opening up and sharing his life stories with me. I also thank Silversea, who made our voyages to the world's most rewarding destinations possible."

McCurry: The Pursuit of Color is now available on Amazon Prime Video (U.S and U.K.) and Apple TV (U.S.).

Corrected: Miray Cruises announces new ship for its Life at Sea Cruises brand

Miray Cruises announced today the introduction of Lara, an extraordinary new world cruise ship that will redefine the realm of extended voyages. "After the overwhelming demand received from the initial launch of Life at Sea Cruises, Miray Cruises has now acquired a newer, larger vessel to accommodate the unprecedented enthusiasm from adventurous souls worldwide," the company said in a statement.

Gemini, the former cruise ship that successfully launched Life at Sea Cruises, is slated to continue her Aegean Sea voyages and will now be succeeded by Lara. While larger than Gemini, Lara will still maintain an intimate feel and experience for the residents onboard who are looking to create a like-minded community at sea for the three year voyage. Residents will experience a neighborhood-type feel onboard MV Lara and indulge in a sense of community and belonging.

“We are beyond excited to introduce the beautiful MV Lara for this incredible, history-making, 3-year voyage" says Kendra Holmes, CEO of Miray Cruises. “Our fleet is expanding due to the unprecedented demand for our long-duration circumnavigation voyages to responsibly explore every corner of our planet. Our residents are changing their lives for this opportunity, and we are honored to be a part of their personal journeys.”

The new vessel will offer Life at Sea Cruises residents an enchanting fusion of amenities and convenience with redesigned staterooms, a business center with offices, a cigar and wine bar, along with other creative offerings. There will also be a 24-hour on-call hospital with complimentary medical visits, learning and enrichment lectures, and opportunities to engage in volunteer and philanthropic initiatives. During the three year journey, the 42,000 gross ton vessel’s voyage will span over 130,000 miles covering 382 ports, 7 continents, and 148 countries.

MV Lara ia the former AIDAaura, which sails with AIDA untill early fall.

"Seeing such an overwhelming interest in our itinerary and unique ports where we will always be in summer is truly thrilling" says Ethem Bayramoglu, COO of Miray Cruises. "This is evidence of the allure of our extended world cruise concept and the exceptional experiences that await our residents aboard MV Lara."

The world’s first three year cruise showcases an extraordinary itinerary created by Robert Dixon that encompasses 13 of the Wonders of the World, UNESCO World Heritage sites, as well as other mesmerizing locations. At each port of call, travelers will have the luxury of multiple days for unhurried exploration and the freedom to embark on their own unique adventures.

“As the world turns around the sun to create years, Miray Cruises will turn around the world to create a lifetime of memories. Let’s do it together!” says Fuat Guven, Vice President of Hotel Operations for Miray Cruises.

Prior to its inaugural departure from Istanbul on November 1st, 2023, Miray Cruises will be hosting a series of welcoming events and revelries in Turkey for all booked residents which coincides with the 100th anniversary celebrations of the foundation of the Turkish Republic. These celebrations will set the stage for the journey of a lifetime, creating unforgettable memories from the very beginning.

Correction: MV Lara will be AIDAaura, not AIDAvita.

Celebrity Cruises to base two ships in Caribbean 2024 year round, to offer Perfect Day at CocoCay

Celebrity Cruises, the premium market unit in the Royal Caribbean Group, said starting next April, two of its ships would operate year round in the Caribbean and offer the CocoCay private island experience as part of their itineraries.

Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Reflection would double the brand's number of year-round Caribbean sailings and introduce the first weekend itineraries, but both ships would now offer guests with the exciting opportunity to experience Perfect Day at CocoCay for the first time in history, the company said in a statement.

"Our customers are consistently asking for more opportunities to visit this stunning region year-round, have more weekend options so they can getaway easier, and have expressed a desire for a private island destination. By introducing this new program, we can meet this demand and offer something new and historic to all our guests," says Laura Hodges Bethge, President of Celebrity Cruises. "Perfect Day is a destination like no other, and we are honored to add it to our portfolio."

The news comes soon after sister brand Royal Caribbean International had said that Utopia of the Seas, the sixth and final Oasis class ship, would operate short cruises in the Caribbean that would include CocoCay, once the ship would be delivered in July 2024.

“Located in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay is a vibrant island paradise and one of the Caribbean's most exclusive destinations. Offering the best of beach-side bliss and sun-soaked excitement, guests can find peak relaxation or the ultimate thrill – whatever their speed and definition of the perfect day means,” Celebrity Cruises said.

Travelers can enjoy miles of pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, take a dip in the largest freshwater pool in The Bahamas, swim up to the bar for a refreshing tropical cocktail, experience the ultimate in relaxation and privacy at Coco Beach Club that features a heated infinity pool, specialty restaurant, and 20 exclusive overwater cabanas. Hideaway Beach, a new offering debuting in January, will offer an adults only paradise, with private cabanas and a new signature food outlet. If you are eager to get the adrenaline flowing on North America's tallest waterslide, or soar 450 feet above the island in Up, Up and Away — an epic balloon ride that provides breathtaking panoramic views— Perfect Day has something for everyone.

Carnival raises operating income and cost projections for 2023

Carnival Corporation & plc, the world’s largest cruise shipping company, has raised its adjusted EBITDA forecast for the current financial year, but its forecast for costs was also increased.

The company now expects adjusted EBITDA of $4.10 billion to $4.25 billion, above March guidance's range and with a midpoint increase of $175 million, for the financial year to 30 November 2023.

This includes approximately $0.5 billion unfavorable impact from fuel price and currency compared to 2019.

The company forecast continued sequential improvement in each quarter in adjusted EBITDA per ALBD as compared to 2019, driven by maintaining net per diems above 2019 levels while closing the gap in occupancy to 2019 levels, while it also forecast occupancy of 100% or higher.

“Net per diems of 5.5% to 6.5% (in constant currency) two and a half points higher than March guidance, based on the acceleration of its strong demand profile. Adjusted cruise costs excluding fuel per ALBD (in constant currency) one and a half points higher than March guidance, due to a slower expected ramp down in inflationary pressures than previously estimated, incentive compensation increases reflecting expected improvements in the company's current and long-term performance and continued increases in advertising investments,” the company said

For the third quarter of 2023, the company expects:

Adjusted EBITDA of $2.05 billion to $2.15 billion, a significant improvement compared to the second quarter of 2023 and adjusted net income of $0.95 billion to $1.05 billion.

Occupancy of 107% or higher.

“The company expects net yields compared to 2019 (in constant currency) to be positive for the second half of the year, despite the headwinds from the loss of St. Petersburg as a marquee destination due to the suspension of cruises to Russia,” Carnival said.
