AIDA Cruises, which is part of the Carnival Corporation & plc group, said it would start cooperation with the world's leading marine battery supplier Corvus Energy.
“On Tuesday, 20 August 2019, a corresponding agreement was signed. The aim of the cooperation is the installation of lithium-ion battery storage systems on board the AIDA fleet and the start of operations on the first AIDA ship in 2020,” AIDA said in a statement.
Michael Thamm, Group CEO Costa Group and Carnival Asia said: "Our goal is the emissions-neutral ship operation. The electrification of our ships is another important milestone on this path. Thanks to the cooperation with Corvus Energy, already in a few month, AIDA Cruises is going to launch this innovative technology on a large cruise ship."
The Norwegian-Canadian company Corvus Energy is one of the most renowned suppliers of marine batteries and is considered a pioneer in the development of maritime energy storage systems. Further partners of the project will be the companies ABB and Siemens.
Following the introduction of low-emission LNG operations in cruise shipping, AIDA Cruises is now also stepping up into the practical use of electrical energy from battery storage systems on board large cruise ships. Thanks to the use of this technology, the consumption of fossil fuel will be reduced further and the efficiency of ship operations will be increased significantly. It is planned to incorporate the valuable experiences from this pilot operation of battery systems on board other AIDA and Costa cruise ships as well.
The use of a battery system on an AIDA ship is another important step in the implementation of the "Green Cruising Strategy". Previously, by the end of 2018, AIDA Cruises had pioneered a technology leap forward with the launch of AIDAnova, the world's first cruise ship operating entirely on low-emission LNG (LNG). Just a few days ago, AIDA Cruises was awarded the Blue Angel, the German Federal Government’s ecolabel for AIDAnova’s environmentally friendly ship design. By 2023, two more AIDA LNG vessels will be put into service.
By the end of next year, 12 of 14 AIDA cruise ships will be able to receive shore power where available. Since 2017, AIDAsol has been using the shore power plant in Hamburg-Altona in regular operation.
As part of its "Green Cruising Strategy", AIDA is also exploring the possibilities of CO2-free production of liquefied gas from renewable sources ("Power to Gas" project) or the use of fuel cells in cruise shipping. Already in 2021, in cooperation with Meyer Werft shipyard and other partners the first fuel cell test is scheduled on boar

Specialist naval design and architecture firm Oliver Design has been commissioned to design the interior decoration on board the Villa de Teror, Trasmediterranea's new state-of the-art 1500-passenger ferry. The Spanish firm designed a variety of areas on two decks, totalling around 3,500 square metres (380,000 square feet).
Oliver Design faced tough competition from leading Spanish and international firms. The work consisted of complete design of the interior decoration for the vessel, as well as an external area including a swimming pool. Specialist staff from Oliver Design spent five months working on this complex project, right through from the concept design stage to creation of the component drawings, selection of materials and high- quality rendering.
The design features an attractive modern look; every effort has been made to give each interior area its own distinct character, while at the same time creating a warm and inviting environment for passengers. VIP areas and cabins are fitted out in a combination of wood surfaces and stainless-steel accessories. The lighting is based on embedded LED fittings and combines indirect light and decorative lamps.
The spaces created by Oliver Design include the reception and customs area, shops, self-service food-lounge, a bar and caféwith an indoor section and an outdoor zone complete with swimming pool and two glazed side galleries leading to the VIP zone, seating areas, cabins and creche. Rest areas have been deliberately divided up into smaller lounges to create more intimate spaces, some with spectacular panoramic views.
The Villa de Teror takes its name from a town on Gran Canaria. It was built at the Factorías Vulcano shipyard in Pontevedra. The vessel is 139 metres long and can accommodate 1,500 passengers and 450 vehicles (600 lane metres of cargo). It is fitted with all the most modern technological advances and has been built to the latest environmental and energy-efficiency specifications governing emission reduction and water treatment. The Villa de Teror is due to come into operation shortly, connecting the Spanish town of Motril and the Moroccan cities of Nador and Al Hoceima.
