SMM, the international maritime trade fair, has been postponed to 2 to 5 February 2021 due to the COVID-19, outbreak, the organisers said in a statement.
Originally SMM was to take place from 8 to 11 September 2020.
“The continued highly dynamic development of COVID-19 and the resulting ban on major events have left us no other choice but to postpone SMM to next year. Finding a suitable new timeframe for SMM was not an easy task for us, and we are happy we have been able to do so," said Bernd Aufderheide, President and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress.
Following intense consultations with the exhibitor advisory board, Hamburg Messe und Congress and its partners and other exhibitor representatives have agreed on the new dates, from 2 to 5 February 2021. This means SMM will be the new year’s first international gathering of the maritime industry.
"We will offer the global maritime community an extraordinary, more compact SMM in February 2021. Together we will overcome this crisis and host an SMM that will live up to its own, high standards. We are looking forward to welcoming everybody back," said Bernd Aufderheide.

Columbia Cruise Services (CCS), Germany’s leading cruise ship management company, is to welcome Club Med as a new client.
Club Med appointed the technical management including purchasing, logistics, port operations, crewing and recruiting of the sailing passenger vessel Club Med 2 to the Hamburg-based company.
The Club Med 2, one of the largest motor sailing ships in the world, is owned by Club Med, a French based tourism company that was founded in the 1950s. Club Med operates 66 holiday clubs worldwide as well as the very iconic club ship Club Med 2.
CCS Managing Director Olaf Groeger is looking forward to a successful and long lasting partnership with Club Méditerranée S.A.: “We are extremely happy to be entrusted by Club Med with the management of the Club Med 2. A very special and prestigious cruise vessel. Her unique appearance made her an internationally well known tall ship which adds even further diversity to the CCS fleet. We are very proud having her and look forward to a succesful and growing relationship with Club Med.”
Extraordinary times require individual solutions: with the world-wide COVID-19 restrictions in place, CCS is currently working on a remote management take-over option in cooperation with the classification society and the flag administration.
The Club Med 2 was built in 1992 at the Société Nouvelle des Ach shipyard in Le Havre and completely renovated in 1996. It is a five-masted computer-controlled staysail schooner, operated as a cruise ship. She has eight decks, six of which are accessible to passengers. The ship has 184 outside cabins for 392 passengers. The crew consists of 200 sailors in total, of which 45 are employed in the deck and engine departments. During summer the Club Med 2 is cruising in the Mediterranean and in winter she shifts to the Caribbean.

MAN Energy Solutions has won the order to supply 6 × MAN B&W 9S50ME-C9.6 Tier II-compliant main engines for three 238-metre roro vessels intended for operation in the Baltic Sea. The customer is Finnlines PLC., the Finnish shipping company and part of the Grimaldi Group. MAN Energy Solutions’ two-stroke licensee – Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (Engine & Machinery Business Unit) – will build the engines in Korea, while Nanjing Jinling shipyard in China will construct the vessels. Delivery of the first vessels is expected from 2021.
The MAN B&W ME-C engines – as part of the hybrid propulsion set-up – will enable a 100% increase in efficiency when measured in terms of consumption/ton of freight transported, compared to existing vessels.
The new order follows that made by Grimaldi in 2019 for nine very similar vessels with the same scope of supply, and adds to recent orders MAN Energy Solutions has won in the competitive Baltic market.
Designed by Nordic marine designer, Knud E. Hansen, the new roros will be among the first examples of a new series of hybrid vessels. These will use fuel-oil during navigation and lithium mega-batteries in port, thus guaranteeing ‘zero emissions in port – and meeting the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) Green Plus class notation – while still satisfying energy requirements at berth. The batteries will be recharged during navigation through shaft generators adding the so-called peak-shaving system. The newbuilds will also feature ice-class classification, 1A Super.
Bjarne Foldager – Senior Vice President, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions – said: “We’re very happy to win this order and to add to our recent successes in the Finnish market. To be able to add it to the previous nine vessels from the Grimaldi order is also very pleasing. Our technology will play a crucial role in this innovative hybrid propulsion system that really points the way for shipping in the future. I look forward to seeing these unique vessels enter service.”
Foldager added: “These new roros will be among the most environmentally sustainable ships of their type. Finnlines is a frontrunner in the development of hybrid power ships, of marine battery packs and of energy-management systems. By investing in research & development and by teaming with its suppliers, Finnlines is well on time to meet and clearly exceed all the ambitious environmental targets set by the IMO and by the international community for shipping.”
Mikael Lindholm, Head of Newbuilding Department, Finnlines, said: “These environmentally friendly vessels will be built taking all technological and environmental factors into account and thus will increase our energy efficiency further. We continue our successful track record in investing in the sustainable operation of our fleet.”
Bolidt lights the way to cruise ship creativity

New additions to the Bolideck range of ship deck covering solutions from Bolidt are illuminating design thinking across the cruise ship and superyacht sectors, with a first delivery of Bolideck LED leading to follow up orders from several owners.
Bolideck LED is the latest variation of a decking solution which has established itself as the cruise industry market leader. Featuring integral LED lighting, the unique product has made a big impression after its first installation onboard the 2,894-passsenger capacity TUI Cruises vessel Mein Schiff 2.
Bolideck LED has been deployed to striking effect in one bar and in a number of passenger access areas on Mein Schiff 2. It is also part of a stunning ‘floor diamonds’ artwork on the ship, developed in partnership with ICArt and design studio SOFTlab.
Installation of the novel artwork floor required close cooperation between the shipyard, Meyer Turku, Bolidt and SPT Finland, while the vessel was under construction at the Finnish yard. The project’s success depended on the fitting of the LED lighting with the right sequencing and at the optimum time in the production process to enable Bolidt to complete the striking flush decking finish.
“Feedback from passengers and crew on Mein Schiff 2 has been very positive,” says Jacco van Overbeek, Director, Maritime Division, Bolidt. “Following on from this initial installation, Bolideck® LED has attracted a lot of interest within the market and has been specified for several additional cruise vessel projects, with installations due to take place over the coming year or so.”
Bolideck LED offers designers a high degree of flexibility as it is available in a wide range of different formats. This allows the client to integrate LED lighting within a larger deck space or deck design, or alternatively to create specific functional features, in sports courts or exits for example. Bolideck LED also allows deck lighting to be programmed to form different patterns, or to vary the intensity of individual LEDs. This opens up almost endless possibilities for designers to be creative in terms of shape, colour palette and mood. Bolideck LED lighting can also be made invisible when turned off.
“With any number of lighting patterns possible, Bolideck LED brings additional freedom of expression for cruise ship interior designers. But it could also be used as a means to enhance safety,” adds van Overbeek. “As with all our products the important thing is that it can be seamlessly integrated with other systems onboard.”
Along with Bolideck LED, Mein Schiff 2 features over 10,000m2 of Bolidt products onboard, continuing the company’s close relationship with TUI Cruises as it expands and enhances its fleet. Other products used include Bolideck Future Teak, Bolideck Select Soft and Bolideck Select Hard.
Bolideck LED was developed in-house at the company’s research and development centre, which has a long-standing reputation for innovation and creativity. Van Overbeek concludes, “In these uncertain times we need innovation more than ever before and, in this regard, Bolidt has a unique track record that will help it and its partners in the maritime sector find a way forward.”
