The first phase of the strategic partnership will focus on the development of a standardized application to meet the needs of Carnival Corporation’s nine global cruise line brands and the setting of global data standards in order to provide a single asset management solution across the company’s fleet. Through global standardization, the company will see significant operational benefits including reductions in overall operating costs and increased worker efficiencies on board and ashore.
“This partnership is monumental for SpecTec Cruise and truly solidifies our dedication to the cruise sector,” said Roddy MacLennan, CEO. “Carnival Corporation is the largest operator in the cruise industry, and as a long-term partner, we're excited to work together to deliver a single AMOS solution that achieves their end goals today and well into the future.”

Under the new agreement, and working in close collaboration with all brands and their partners, SpecTec will deliver a fleetwide solution that will encompass all Carnival Corporation ships, which will enable the company to better leverage its industry-leading scale to drive significant operational improvement. Fleet rollout is expected to be completed by 2023.
“Carnival Corporation is focused on aligning our fleet of more than 100 ships onto a single, global AMOS environment, which will enable us to unlock significant value across our technical assets through globalized data and aligned processes," said Doug Frauenberger, director of MAST, Carnival Corporation. “SpecTec is the leading asset management solution provider in the cruise industry, and we look forward to building off the success our Holland America Group and Carnival UK brands have had using AMOS to deliver a robust solution to meet our unique business needs.”

Fritdjof Nansen, the second of two 20,889 gross ton expedition cruise ships for Hurtigruten, is about to enter service and Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) that worked on the ship calls its interiors minimalistic, times and sustainable.
“The essential focus in the design for Hurtigruten’s new cruise ship has been sustainable and timeless design to ensure the guests get the very best sustainable experience at sea,” said Daniel Nerhagen, TDoS Partner & Project Director for Fritjof Nansen.
The interior is minimalistic with bright colours in natural materials such as birch, oak and wool. The furnishing is comfortable and modest to give full attention on expedition experiences.
The core of the ship is the Science center, a meeting point equipped with professional microscopes, a virtual reality station and four large screens. The guests can go deeper into the history and nature behind the destinations together with the expedition team consisting of hand-picked experts.
Besides guiding the guests, the scientists collect water samples and make analysis of levels of plankton and pollutants such as microplastics along the journey. The expedition team tailors activities for the guests according to destination and weather condition. The ship has kayaks, underwater drones, SUPs and Explorer boats which can be used by the guests, all to add memorable experiences.
In addition, Nansen has three restaurants with a wide range of dining options, two bars, a panorama lounge and a wellness centre, all designed by TDoS.

The technology group Wärtsilä has again been selected to provide an integrated system consisting of the LNG plant, dual-fuel engines, and electrical propulsion system for the latest addition to Vancouver, Canada based BC Ferries’ series of Salish Class vessels. Three similar ferries, all operating on Wärtsilä engines fuelled by LNG, have already been delivered. As with the previous three ferries, Remontowa Shipbuilding (RSB), located in Gdansk, Poland, will also build this latest ship. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in January 2020.
“The very best endorsement of customer satisfaction is repeat orders, and this latest contract further strengthens the partnership between our three companies. The decision by BC Ferries to again select RSB as the yard, and to opt for Wärtsilä’s proven and well-established LNG propulsion technology, provides clear confirmation of the efficiency of Wärtsilä’s integrated solution concept. It also shows that the performance of the vessel provided by the Wärtsilä solution, and based on the design by Remontowa Marine Design and Consulting (RMDC), delivers great operational benefits to the owner,” says Wilco van der Linden, Director of Business Development, Ferry Industry at Wärtsilä.
“We are proud to extend our fleet of environmentally sustainable and highly efficient Salish Class ferries. The Wärtsilä LNG solutions enable us to reliably serve our customers while helping to protect the pristine waters of British Columbia,” says Mark Collins, President & CEO of British Columbia Ferry Services Inc.
The Wärtsilä scope of supply includes three Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel engines, operating on LNG fuel, a Wärtsilä LNGPac fuel storage, supply and control system, and the Wärtsilä Low Loss Concept (LLC). The LLC is a power distribution system that delivers higher efficiency, less weight and volume, and high system redundancy. The equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yard in Q3 this year.
The 107 metres long Salish Class ferries are designed to carry 600 passengers and crew, and up to 138 vehicles. They serve routes between the city of Vancouver and ports on Vancouver Island. In addition to the equipment for these vessels, Wärtsilä also upgraded two of BC Ferries’ larger Spirit Class vessels to LNG fuelled operation. This work was carried out in 2018.
