Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) was involved in the design of the interior of Norwegian Encore, the final unit of the Breakaway plus series of ships of Norwegian Cruise Line.
The company was chosen to design the top guest areas onboard; all cabins and suites, the Aft Main Restaurants, Steakhouse, Los Lobos and many more restaurants and bars onboard.
TDoS can also add the Haven, an opulent area exclusively for private members, to its record. The Haven includes courtyards, luxurious relaxation lounges and top-notch restaurants serving gourmet food. Access to this exclusive area must be booked in advance.
TDoS is also the design team behind lounges such as the Observation Lounge, a spacious lounge with an expansive view over the horizon. This lounge is divided into smaller areas, making it a perfect place both for relaxation and meetings.
“The Observation Lounge’s unique multifunction makes it the ideal lounge for both mornings and evenings. Here, for example, finger food is served around the clock together with soft music in the background,” says TDoS partner Helena Sawelin.
Norwegian Encore left Miami on her maiden voyage in November. She offers seven-day cruises in the Caribbean and in April she will head for the East Coast of the United States.

Havila Voyages, a Norwegian company, said it is purchasing Norwegian furniture to furnish its four 15,800 gross ton newbuildings on order a shipyard in Turkey for use on the domestic coastal express service.
"We want to show the best Norway has to offer also when it comes to furniture and interior,” says CEO Arild Myrvoll.
Passengers on the Havila Voyages can rest, eat and enjoy the view while seated in the chairs and sofas from Brunstad, Fora Form and Ekornes of Sunnmøre, while passengers and crew will sleep on mattresses from Recticel of Åndalsnes.
All of them are based on the west coast of Norway. The common areas consisting of lounges, atriums and conference rooms, cafés, and buffet and á-la-carte restaurants are all furnished with chairs and recliners from these Norwegian furniture makers.
Myrvoll says that the choice of furniture is about more than just aesthetics. “This is quality furniture that provides a high degree of comfort for our passengers. It has also been important for us to use furniture from local suppliers, located within a short distance from the coastal route’s ports of call, to make it practical, easy and sustainable also when it comes to service and delivery.”
Locally made and sustainable
All the furniture ordered from Fora Form will be produced in Ørsta, where the order announcement was celebrated with cake in the canteen. Regional manager Stine Kahrs says that the order is important for them as a company, and she hopes that the positive cooperation between the parties, both internally and with Voyages and its partners, will spread for the benefit of Havila Voyages’s passengers and crew alike.
Brunstad in Sykkylven are also delighted to be exhibiting their furniture on-board the new coastal routes, and sales and marketing manager Atle Ødegård views the delivery to Havila Voyages as proof that the local market is merging with the spot market and the market for cruises and hotels.
Norwegian value creation
CEO of Havila Voyages, Arild Myrvoll, says that they originally wanted to build the new ships in Norway, but that the four ships were ultimately assigned to Tarsan in Turkey due among other things to little interest from Norwegian shipyards.
"It is nonetheless important to us that the building of these ships stimulates Norwegian value creation, and we have found a good alternative solution where Norwegian design, equipment and other Norwegian deliveries make up a over a third of the building costs."
Norwegian Marine Interior (NMI) in Molde is another Norwegian supplier that is part of the building project Havila Voyages. In cooperation with the architects at Steen Friis Design, they have planned, designed, and will deliver and install the furniture and interior for the four new ships.
Reflects Norwegian scenery
General manager at NMI Stein Haugen and project coordinator Sigurd Viseth say that it has been both rewarding and exciting to take part in the construction of such large and brand new passenger ships with the clear message of providing the passengers with both a safe and comfortable trip, as well as reflecting the Norwegian scenery and using Norwegian suppliers.

Høglund Marine Solutions in Norway will supply Fuel Gas Supply Systems (FGSS) to Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) for Tallink Grupp’s newest LNG powered ferry, MySTAR.
Høglund will work with Finnish tank manufacturer West Welding to design and supply the systems that will handle LNG onboard MySTAR, constructed by Rauma Marine Constructions. MySTAR will sail on Tallink's Tallinn - Helsinki route.
The design and engineering of FGSS solutions is a key challenge for the future development of LNG powered shipping, particularly for passenger vessels. The process must take into account complex safety concerns stemming from impacts on the engine cooling system, hazardous area management, and ventilation systems.
Høglund will bring their years of experience in gas control and automation solutions to this project. Høglund’s FGSS solutions are integrated with the ship’s IAS (Integrated Automation System) which enables better access to data in the system for playback, analysis and optimisation. It also allows better integration between onboard systems such as alarms, emergency shutdown and power management.
Commenting on this announcement, Børge Nogva, CEO of Høglund Marine Solutions: “I’m very happy Høglund has been chosen to be the supplier of the FGSS for Tallink Grupp’s newest LNG fueled vessel MySTAR. It’s great to see the cruise and ferry operators continue to realise the potential of LNG as a viable fuel option, and we are thrilled to be working with our partners across Scandinavia and the Baltics on this new project.”
“It is important to remember that in order to have an effective and efficient LNG vessel, you need a smarter FGSS. At Høglund we combine gas solutions with system automation to put the control of the FGSS at the fingers of the crew, providing improved reliability, efficiency and safety for the FGSS and the vessel. The crew and operators at Tallink will also have peace of mind that the FGSS is backed up with 24/7 technical support
Jyrki Heinimaa, President and CEO at Rauma Marine Construction said: “RMC is happy to include the FGSS by Høglund to its newbuilding NB6003 with the trust that Høglund will provide a sophisticated and reliable solution in time to our dear customer for its newest shuttle ferry MySTAR”.
Captain Tarvi-Carlos Tuulik, Head of Ship Management at Tallink Grupp commented on the news: “Tallink Grupp is continuously looking for ways to bring innovative and green solutions both onto the Baltic Sea and to shipping in general. So, it is great to work with companies like Høglund who also have innovation and environmentally friendly solutions at the heart of their business and together we can work towards achieving sustainable shipping goals.”
Following on from Tallink’s latest vessel, Megastar, the new shuttle ferry MyStar will be dual fuel operated with an overall length of 212m and a passenger capacity of 2,800. Delivery is scheduled for January 2022 and production will start during spring 2020.
Trimline turns 55

Trimline, the UK based ship interior refurbishment specialist, has turned 55 this week. Over the years they have seen many competitors come and go, so we asked them what it takes to succeed in the marine interior outfitting industry.
FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS
When founder Reg Oliver was made redundant in 1965, he was gifted a sewing machine by his ex-employer. While some may have been down-heartened, Reg saw this as an opportunity to build a better future for his young family at the time.
Reg had a background in ‘trimming’, an upholstery practice he’d used during his time working for the railway. So, armed with this knowledge he set up Trimline and offered upholstering services to the local marine market.
SECOND GENERATION
By the 1980s the company had expanded to offering full interior refits for cruise ships, ferries and defence vessels.
It was at this time that Reg’s sons Mike and Gary Oliver joined the business, carrying out their apprenticeships on the shop floor and learning the business from the ground up.
By the time Reg retired in the early 1990s, Gary had become Managing Director and Mike was heading up the Sales department.
SUCCESS FACTORS
Now Chairman, Gary told us “I have often been asked how have we done it? The answer is not a simple one, but the top three would be:
- Listen very carefully to what your customers tell you and really get to know them. From building a specification to finding out what they are planning next, find out what they are thinking, remember it is they that control your world.
- Do not remove all the profits from the business, save enough for a rainy day or even a recession.
- Employ and try your best to retain really good people who are smarter than you are. The ego has no place in business.”
DOUBLE CELEBRATION
Last week, Barry Hurst celebrated his 40-year work anniversary. Reflecting on his time at Trimline, Barry said “I joined Trimline in 1980 so I have seen a lot of changes during my 40 years working here. The industry has changed, and we have changed with it, but the one consistent is the people here. Trimline is such a great team to work with and I’m still enjoying it”
